CANNON BEACH, Ore. — A fire chief was suddenly relieved of his duties Monday night.

Daily Astorian reported that Cannon Beach (Ore.) Rural Fire Protection District Chief Mike Balzer, 58, was notified during a district meeting.

“It was a personnel matter,” District President Sharon Clyde said. “I’m not able to comment much at this time.”

Assistant Fire Chief Frank Swedenborg will step in as the interim chief.

“Everything else will remain the same,” Clyde said. “All the services are still top-notch. There will be no interruption in services.”

Officials will start a search process for a permanent fire chief. There is no timeline for hiring yet, according to the report.

Balzer, who could not be reached for comment, started as a volunteer firefighter in the 1980s. He was sworn in as fire chief in February 2012.
