MAN, W. Va. — A fire chief narrowly avoided injury after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.
Herald-Dispatch reported that Logan County Fire Chief Joe Wimmer was directing traffic while firefighters conducted hazard control around downed power lines.
Wimmer said he motioned for a vehicle that was approaching at a high speed to stop, but the driver, Jeffery Woods, ignored Wimmer and struck him in the legs, causing him to fall onto the hood of the car and then the ground.
Logan County Deputy R. Johnson said Woods then placed the vehicle in reverse in an effort to flee the scene and struck another vehicle.
Johnson said Woods refused to exit the vehicle when asked and grabbed the steering wheel so that he could not be pulled away from the car. Johnson was eventually able to remove Woods from the vehicle after a brief struggle.
Police said Woods showed no signs of impairment after field sobriety tests. He faces several charges, including obstructing a firefighter and reckless driving.
