NEW YORK — FDNY’s new strategic plan will focus on innovative technologies and enhanced preparedness and prevention strategies, according to Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.
The plan was announced Thursday, outlining the top priorities and initiatives that will guide the department through 2013.
“Being the greatest fire department in the world means constantly working on ways to improve,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano said. “Any successful business regularly reviews its operations in order to remain effective. Our business, quite literally, is saving lives.”
At the heart of the plan are five key goals:
• Improve emergency response operations, which includes using new technology and expanded networks to improve emergency preparedness as well as enhancing terrorism and disaster preparedness through additional drills and agency protocols
• Enhance the health and safety of members, which includes working further to establish a culture of safety, continuing the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment program and developing prevention and wellness programs for FDNY members
• Strengthen management and organizational development, which includes further management training for chiefs and officers in fire and EMS as well as developing a strategic plan for the Department’s use of technology
• Increase diversity, which includes continued efforts to recruit, retain and promote men and women of diverse backgrounds
• Improve fire prevention and safety education, which includes expanding fire safety education programs among special populations, including the disabled, and improving customer service in the Bureau of Fire Prevention
“This plan prepares us for the challenges that lay ahead to make FDNY safer, stronger and more capable than ever before,” Cassano said.
