COSTA MESA, Calif. — The City Council Tuesday night approved a mandatory unpaid furlough and benefit reductions for unrepresented fire management.

Deputy fire chiefs and battalion chiefs have agreed to a 5 percent salary reduction and cuts in benefits for a savings of about $68,500.

The cuts will begin Oct. 11 and last until Oct. 9, 2010. Salary reductions and suspension of benefits will save the city about $45,700 during the remainder of this fiscal year — about eight months remaining. About $22,800 will be saved in the next fiscal year, according to staff reports.

City leaders approved a few months ago a budget that included offering firefighters incentives to retire early in exchange for forgoing scheduled pay raises. City and police employees were required to take mandatory furloughs until Aug. 28, 2010.
