Hybrid police and fire department unlikely as contract nears agreement

The department would have cross trained police officers and firefighters to do both jobs

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The proposed hybrid Ypsilanti police and fire department that several firefighters were strongly against is now unlikely to happen, according to Mayor Paul Schreiber.

The news comes as the city nears a contract agreement with the fire department’s union, nearly a year and a half after the previous one expired.

“Right now for this contract that we’re going to be considering, it does not allow for a hybrid police and fire department,” Schreiber said. City Manager Ralph Lange introduced the idea of the hybrid department in January. The department would have cross trained police officers and firefighters to do both jobs. Lange declined to comment for this article.
