NJ firefighter suspended after causing 3 crashes in 30 minutes

BAYONNE, N.J. — The Bayonne Fire Department captain who was charged with drunk driving after allegedly causing three separate accidents within 30 minutes last week has been suspended, officials said yesterday.

Capt. John Leahy, 46, was suspended without pay within 48 hours of the March 5 crashes on 30th Street and will remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation into the incident, Bayonne Public Safety Director Jason O’Donnell confirmed yesterday.

At 8:30 a.m. on the day of the crash, the 20-year veteran of the department was driving a Chevy pickup heading eastbound on 30th Street near Avenue E when the pickup rear-ended a Chevy HHR, a police report says. Leahy and the driver exchanged information before leaving the scene, a reports says.
