KANAWHA COUNTY, W. Va. — W. Va. county officials are giving more time to two volunteer fire departments that have not received their annual contributions because they did not provide financial documents.
Three of the 27 Kanawha County fire departments have not provided “simple financial documents” that are required by law to receive their annual contribution of $20,000 from the county commission, according to WCHS Radio.
The commission is currently working with two of the three departments; the third will not be receiving its check.
“Smithers Fire Department is under criminal investigation,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said. “We tore their check up, we are not going to fund them until they prove to us that they are running an appropriate agency in compliance with the law.”
The two other departments have been in constant contact with the commission, working on filling out their paperwork, while the third has not been in contact at all.
The commission will allow the two remaining departments two more weeks to send in their documentation before their funding is pulled as well.
