PELHAM, N.Y. — Merging with the New Rochelle Fire Department will not happen, after the Village of Pelham decided to hold off on the process during this month’s board meeting.
The village’s Fire Department task force felt the amount of money the village would save did not measure up to the impact losing a firehouse would have on the village, a report from the group said.
The task force also found that residents were concerned about how fast firefighters would be able to get to a fire without a fire department in the village.
The task force, composed of Trustee Joe Marty, who is liaison to the Fire Department; Trustee Adam Kagan; Village Administrator Robert Yamuder; and Fire Chief Bill Stone, said it will continue to look at other ways it can reduce costs for the department, including some over the next year.
New Rochelle City Manager Charles Strome said the city would not be affected by the village’s decision not to merge with the New Rochelle Fire Department.
“The original concept was from the Village. They asked us to consider,” he said in an email. “If they are now saying it is not going through, that is their choice. (It) should not have a material impact on New Rochelle.”
