MAYFAIR, Pa. — One woman jumped from a second-story window and another went into cardiac arrest during an early-morning fire in Mayfair yesterday.

They were among three women who were critically injured in the blaze, two of whom had to be rescued by firefighters, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said.

They may have all had time to get out of the house if there had been working smoke alarms in the building, he said.

Calls came in about the blaze from neighbors on Vincent Street near Crispin about 2:45 a.m.

“We knew we had people in trouble there,” Ayers said.

Firefighters arrived at the middle-of-the-block rowhouse within five minutes of being summoned and rescued two women, one in her 60s and the other in her 40s, from an upstairs rear room.

The woman in her 60s had gone into cardiac arrest, said Ayers. He wasn’t sure of the type or severity of the injuries to the other woman.

The third woman was found down the street from the scene when fire crews arrived. It’s believed that she jumped from a second-story window to escape, Ayers said. He didn’t know her age or the extent of her injuries. All three were hospitalized. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
