The Times-Standard

EUREKA, Calif. — A fire started in a second-story apartment in Eureka Saturday morning was quickly extinguished.

The Eureka Fire Department and Humboldt County Fire District No. 1 responded to the 1200 block of Long Street at about 1:05 a.m. to a report of smoke from a second floor window. The source of the fire appeared to be a towel that was put over a working lamp, according to the EFD.

A working smoke detector alerted the residents and they used two fire extinguishers to dampen the blaze. They called the EFD to come check on the fire to ensure it was completely out.

There was approximately $5,000 of property damage and less than $1,000 of damage to the apartment’s contents, according to the EFD. About $395,000 of property was saved.
