AMARILLO, Texas — A firefighter made a deal with a patient to take care of his dog while he was in the hospital.

ABC7 reported that Amarillo Fire Department firefighter Sam Berry responded to a call of a man needing medical assistance, according to a post shared by the fire department.

When the man, named Wes, did not want to go to the hospital and leave his dog, Emma, behind, Berry offered to take care of her.

“Now, I am sure Sam could have made the deal with Wes and taken Emma to the pound or whatever,” Wes’s brother, Warren Beach, said in the Facebook post. “Sam, however, did take Emma home. He then bathed Emma, cut her nails and even took her to the vet to get some meds because Emma was distressed without Wes.”

The Facebook post added that Wes has stage 3 sepsis and was put in an induced coma after being transported to the hospital. As of Thursday, Beach said Wes was off the ventilator, and he is “not out of the woods yet, but things are looking better.”

Berry said he would look after the blind, three-legged dog until Wes is released.
