PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A high school student suffered a head injury Tuesday afternoon after falling 15 feet into a concrete shaft at Berkshire Community College.

Shortly after 1 p.m., the male victim, whom Pittsfield fire officials wouldn’t identify, was on a break after finishing a class he was taking at BCC. He was with other students near the Koussevitzky Arts Center when the metal grate covering the shaft he was standing on gave way, sending him to the bottom of the concrete hole, according to Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Stephenson.

“He never lost consciousness, but had a laceration to his head,” Stephenson said.

Firefighters, with the help of BCC maintenance personnel, rescued the student from the shaft and he was taken to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment.
