MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Firefighters were fast asleep early Saturday morning inside Engine 16’s living quarters at 10320 W. Fond Du Lac Ave. in Milwaukee.
Suddenly, one of the firefighters was awakened by noises in the fire house and went to investigate.
What happened next was a struggle between the firefighter and the alleged intruder, a male suspect, according Milwaukee Fire Department Deputy Chief Aaron Lipski.
“Late at night like this with everything buttoned up tight and the doors locked, it’s extremely unusual to lift your head off the pillow and be confronted with something like this,” Lipski said.
The firefighter sustained a minor injury during the struggle at around 2:15 a.m. Four other firefighters were awakened and immediately held the suspect until police arrived.
Lipski said, “it’s a kick in the teeth to be woken up out of a dead sleep and you’re embroiled in something like this. Most reasonable people would have difficulty turning off the shock. They went right to taking care of the guy to make sure he wasn’t injured in the scuffle.”
