EUTAW, Ala. — Springfield (Ala.) Volunteer Fire Department Asst. Fire Chief Stanley Martin Jr. died while working a structure fire around 2:30 a.m. Monday. Chief Martin was 71.
The Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs reports that Chief Martin was working as an apparatus operator at a structure fire when he complained of shortness of breath after suppression activities ended. An ambulance was called, but Chief Martin stopped breathing before it arrived.
Resuscitation efforts were initiated and Chief Martin was transported to the hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending.
