CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A firefighter died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency on April 23.

Lt. Jeffrey Newland, 50, suffered an aortic dissection four hours after going off of a shift that included several emergency response calls, the U.S. Fire Administration reported.

Lt. Newland was treated and transported to a local hospital and was then flown to another hospital for specialized care. He remained there for a week before passing away from his injury.

Lt. Newland was a 14-year veteran with North Port Fire Rescue.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
