LODD: N.J. firefighter dies of heart attack

Firefighter Barry Van Horn, 68, fell ill after returning from a call; he succumbed to his injuries three days later

SOMERVILLE, N.J. — A volunteer firefighter died Friday after suffering a heart attack on March 25.

The U.S. Fire Administration reported that firefighter Barry Van Horn, 68, with the Somerville (N.J.) Fire Department, responded to a fire call at 7:25 a.m. March 25. After the call, he returned to his office to fill out the incident report.

He fell ill shortly after returning and went home, where he later suffered a heart attack. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries.

Firefighter Van Horn was also a fire official for the Borough of Somerville for the past 23 years. Prior to that, he worked for Somerset County Sheriff’s Office where he started as a corrections officer and then a deputy, according to Legacy.com.

He was an active member of West End Hose Company #3 for more than 40 years, serving as ex-captain and head driver. He was also a member of Somerville Rescue Squad, where he was an ex-captain and crew chief.

He was involved with the building of the Somerville Training Tower and restoration of the Somerville Fire Museum, according to the report.

He leaves behind his wife, three children and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 North Gaston Ave, Somerville, N.J., with a firefighter’s service at 6:30 p.m.
