DULUTH, Minn. — A volunteer fire chief died Monday from an apparent heart attack within 24 hours of responding to his fire station for a mutual-aid call.

Chief Matt Frantz, 42, with the Rice Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department, initially joined the department in 2000 and was named fire chief in 2009, The Duluth News Tribune reported.

Chief Frantz was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and camping, according to the report. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and daughters Kirsten and Madeline.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1993, during which time he served in Korea, according to the report. After that, he was a reservist in the Army National Guard until 1998, when he achieved the rank of sergeant.
