SANTA FE, N.M. — A Santa Fe County firefighter was seriously injured in a roadside collision Friday afternoon while attempting to reattach a trailer that had become unhitched from his vehicle, but city and county officials say he is expected to survive.
Santa Fe Police Department Deputy Chief John Schaerfl said the firefighter was driving a county SUV and pulling a trailer northbound on Cerrillos Road between Herrera Drive and Jaguar Drive. The road has a slight incline in this area, and along the hill, the trailer became unhitched, the deputy chief said. The firefighter stopped his vehicle, turned on his emergency lights and attempted to reattach the trailer.
That’s when another vehicle collided with the trailer, pinning the firefighter between the trailer and his vehicle. In the process, he snapped his femur and suffered other unspecified injuries.
The firefighter was rushed to the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.
Schaerfl said the firefighter is expected to recover from multiple injuries.
A county spokeswoman said the firefighter held an officer position and has worked with the department since 2008.
