LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A firefighter was left paralyzed from the chest down by a martial arts training accident.

WYFF4 reported that firefighter Adam Bacon was off-duty Oct. 30 when he was injured. The accident damaged several vertebrae in his neck, leaving him with only limited use of his arms and with chest muscles that are not functioning properly.

A tracheotomy was performed Wednesday to help firefighter Bacon’s ventilator work better. Once he is stabilized, he will be moved to a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, according to the report.

Friends have set up a GoFundMe site to help with expenses as his wife stays with him during his treatment and rehab.

There is also a Facebook page with updates on his condition.
