ASHLAND, Ill. — A handful of volunteer fire departments around west-central Illinois will receive federal funding.
Six departments in the region will receive federal grant funding through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as part of the Volunteer Fire Capacity Grant Program. The program allows departments to be reimbursed for 50% of approved project costs, up to $10,000.

Departments must make the initial investment before receiving reimbursement. Funds can be used for the purchase of necessary equipment or for firefighter training. Among the grants:
- Ashland Fire Department received $8,805.05;
- Griggsville Fire Department received $6,850;
- Kinderhook Fire Protection District received $7,662.50;
- Waverly Fire Protection District received $6,096.22;
- White Hall Fire Protection District received the maximum $10,000; and
- Winchester Volunteer Fire Department received $9,899.01.
