HOLDEN, Mass. — Three local firefighters are being honored on Thursday during the annual “Firefighter of the Year” awards in Cambridge.
Lt. David Chapin, Lt. Barry Tupper and Firefighter/paramedic Paul Pierce are among this year’s recipients from across the state in the 24th annual Firefighter of the Year Heroic Awards.
The three are being honored for a July 2012 rescue of a man trapped in a cement silo. On July 12, 2012, the Fire Department was called to RJ Paquette Concrete, where a worker was trapped in a silo. The man was buried in cement powder up to his chest, about 30 feet from the bottom of the 50-foot silo. Two firefighters climbed the tower ladder to the top of the silo to reach the victim, where they gave him oxygen and prevented him from being further buried. Meanwhile, the silo was cut open using acetylene torches so the material surrounding the trapped man could be removed.
