MUSTANG, Okla. — A fire department in Oklahoma is touring elementary schools and raising awareness about fire safety month with elaborate costumes, singing and dancing.
KFOR.com reported that the Mustang (Okla.) Fire Department used the latest trends like the ‘Whip/Nae Nae’ and bringing Elvis back to life to educate the kids about fire prevention.
“Back in the old days it was, ‘Hey kids, don’t play with lighters and matches,’” said Capt. Andy Willrath. “Now, we found that if they have fun, they’ll remember it. They’ll remember stop, drop and roll and all the safety messages that we give them.”
Teachers notice the kids’ enthusiasm to learn from the energetic firefighters.
“They’re appealing to the kids and they’re using songs and changing the words where the kids would understand the fire safety,” said Sharrie Langston, an elementary physical education teacher.
“I want the kids to talk to the parents about all this stuff and for the parents to remember to change their smoke detector batteries, to test them once a month,” Capt. Willrath said.
The fire department has two more performances at local schools next week to wrap up fire prevention month.
