SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — An estimated 3,500 people die in residential fires every year, says San Clemente entrepreneur Sonja Zozula.

Her family was nearly among the statistics years ago, so she and colleague Jerry Anderson developed LightSaver, a battery-operated device that illuminates doorways when a smoke alarm goes off.

Zozula and Anderson have invested more than $1 million to develop the LightSaver and start the company, LightSaver Technologies.

The device sells for $89.99 from the company website, thelightthatsaveslives.com. The company is working with Lowe’s to sell LightSaver from the building supply retailer’s website. The company is also making a direct response television commercial that Zozula expects to air in April.
