FANNETT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Emergency response crews with the Fannett-Metal Fire Company had to extricate a person from under a tractor during an accident Sunday morning.
The resident, whose name is withheld since it happened on private property, was using a tractor to haul logs, said Calvin Chilcote, assistant chief with the fire company.
“The individual was pulling logs in the wooded area and the log he was pulling hooked onto a tree and it flipped the tractor,” he said.
The tractor flipped 180 degrees onto its roof, pinning the driver in his seat, Chilcote said.
“We had to lift the tractor off of him,” he said. To do this they used rescue air bags and jacks specifically designed for fire department and rescue companies.
The jacks create a “cradle” for the tractor to assist in lifting it while the air bags are placed under each wheel and inflate to lift the vehicle up.
Since the accident took place about 150 yards behind the resident’s house in a wooded area, the company couldn’t get their fire trucks onto the scene, Chilcote said.
Instead, they had to load their equipment onto four-wheel vehicles, he said. It took 21 minutes to extricate the driver and load him into an ambulance.
The driver was transported to York Hospital with injuries of undisclosed severity. A condition update won’t be available since it happened on private property.
