DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Firefighters were sent running for their lives after a carnival worker slammed into an active crash scene.
WSBTV reported that Charles Zuschlag was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer carrying a cheesesteak stand and 400 pounds of propane.
“It was the closest I’ve been to dying in the 19 years I’ve been working,” DeKalb County Fire Captain Tremayne McMurray said.
Capt. Eric Jackson said one police officer almost had his squad door ripped off as he was closing it.
“He’s not only lucky to be alive, but lucky to have his limbs,” Capt. Jackson said.
The fire truck’s door was completely torn off, the windshield shattered, a pull bar ripped from its hinges and a step mangled.
“Kind of odd for him to not see all of those lights,” Capt. McMurray said. “He came right down between the engine and the police cars.”
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but Zuschlag is facing several other violations.
