Couple selling fire truck-turned-ice cream truck for $32K

The vintage rig was rebuilt from a 1946 Ford fire truck that was the first motor-driven fire-fighting vehicle in Albion, Ill.

ST. LOUIS — The popular Fire & Ice Cream Truck, decorated and dishing out deliciousness for eight years, has a “for sale” sign in the window.

Owners Scott and Stephanie Pondrom have listed the truck — a fixture at CityGarden, among other locations, during warm weather — on Craigslist at the low, low price of $32,000.

The Pondroms bought the truck in 2005, when they were living in Chicago. The vintage vending vehicle was rebuilt from a 1946 Ford fire truck that was the first motor-driven fire-fighting vehicle in Albion, Ill.

Soon after, they brought the truck and themselves to St. Louis, where their brother-in-law, Andy Clem, did the engine rebuild and other mechanic work.

“It was kind of a chance at first, because the whole food-truck craze hadn’t really started,” Scott Pondrom said.

Along with the necessary freezing/cooling equipment, it has a “fire-organ,” 12 keyboard-controlled pipes on the roof that shoot flames. The truck is insurable with a clear title and is street legal, Pondrom said.

“We’ve been doing this for nine summers, and I just think it’s time,” he said. “We have a daughter who’s at the age that I’d like to have some of my summer free to do things with her.”
