RANDOLPH, Vt. — A firehouse was badly damaged after a blaze broke out Tuesday morning.

Randolph Village (Vt.) Fire Department Fire Chief Jay Collette said he was “awe-struck” at having to battle a fire at his own station, WPTZ reported. Firefighters from neighboring communities responded to help put out the flames.

“No fire chief wants this in their own house,” Chief Collette said. “But we’ll deal with it. That’s what we do.”

The department’s primary fire engine, only 4 years old, was destroyed in the fire. The rig is valued at $450,000. The extent of the damage to two other fire vehicles parked inside was unclear.

Chief Collette said the department was using its rig for training Monday night but could not say if equipment issues might have contributed to the fire, according to the report.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. No one was injured at the fire station or while fighting the fire.

Two neighboring departments will provide fire protection in the meantime.
