LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol said charges are pending after a collision with a fire truck killed a woman on the Florida Turnpike.

According to the FHP, 88-year-old Virginia Sellitto of Titusville was riding in a car behind a fire truck on the turnpike through Lake County on Friday morning.

Witnesses told investigators the fire truck abruptly slowed to make a U-turn through the median. FHP says the truck was responding to a call for service.

Sellitto’s car struck the rear of the fire truck. At least two other vehicles then struck Sellitto’s car.

Sellitto was pronounced dead at a hospital. The FHP said the woman who had been driving Sellitto was seriously injured. The fire truck driver was not injured.

State law requires all vehicles to stay back 500 feet from emergency vehicles.
