SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio — A firefighter died Sunday of injuries he suffered after slipping off the running board of a fire truck.

WHIZ reported that firefighter Terry Richard Guss, with the South Zanesville Fire Department, slipped from the running board after battling a house fire Friday morning. He landed on his back and struck his head on the apparatus bay floor, according to the report.

Firefighter Guss was taken to the hospital and was initially alert and in little pain, according to the report.

CT scans determined he had a few small bleeds on his brain and he was moved into the intensive care unit, according to the report. Emergency surgery was done to relieve the pressure on his brain. However, after the surgery, the prognosis did not look good.

Firefighter Guss was removed from life support, and died about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the report.
