WESTBROOK, Conn. — An 80-year-old man died when his car crashed into a fire truck at the scene of another accident on Route 9 Tuesday night, state police said.

William F. Spitzschuh of Deep River was pronounced dead at the scene, which was about a half-mile north of Exit 3, police said. Firefighter James Mack was taken to the Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook to be evaluated for a possible injury.

According to the state police, the fatal crash happened about 7 p.m., after firefighters were called to the scene of a two-car collision. Mack parked the 1996 Pierce fire truck in the right lane with its emergency lights on.

Spitzschuh, who was driving an 2001 Toyota Corolla south in the right lane, crashed into the back of the fire truck.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Trooper Paul D. Pederson at the Troop F barracks in Westbrook, 860-399-2100.
