WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A fire truck overturned Tuesday after a road beneath it partially collapsed.

The Wilkes Journal-Pilot reported that four firefighters were on board and suffered minor injuries.

The front end of the fire truck caught fire, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, according to the report.

The fire truck was traveling on a gravel road when the soft bank on the right side gave way and the fire truck slid off the road, flipped over and came to rest on its side. The embankment was weakened by recent rain, according to the report.

The fire truck was being used to check and flush dry fire hydrants in the area at the time of the incident.

Moravian Falls Fire Department Fire Chief Kimi Hamby believes the fire truck is a total loss. The estimated cost of damage is about $600,000.
