LANCASTER, Pa. — Strasburg Township supervisors voted last week to donate $45,000 to the Refton Fire Department to help pay for a new engine.
Supervisors Chairman Thomas Willig said May 7 that the contribution was made in recognition of the time and effort firefighters put in and the risks they take to keep local residents safe.
The money will be used to purchase a used International four-wheel drive, five-man cab, diesel engine from Washington Boro.
The total cost of the engine, which has 8,100 miles on it, is $130,000. It cost $350,000 new.
The vehicle will replace a 25-year-old engine that is no longer up to code. The fire department hopes to raise additional funds by selling the old engine.
Representatives from the fire department said the (move) exceeded their expectations.
The donation came from a fund that has been used for special donations in the past, including $10,000 to the Refton Fire Department for a new parking lot and $50,000 to Strasburg Borough for a new municipal building.
