Phoenix fire captain critically injured in crash

PHOENIX — A Phoenix Fire Department captain was critically injured after she was ejected from a fire truck responding to an emergency call Monday evening.

The fire truck was passing through an intersection when a a 23-year-old woman driving a four door Chevrolet Monte Carlo crashed into the side of it at about 6 p.m.

Capt. Crystal Rezzonico, 49, was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery for a serious head injury. The Phoenix Fire Department said Capt. Rezzonico has been given a good prognosis for recovery.

Thirteen other people were injured in the accident, according to police, when the force of the collision propelled the fire truck into six other cars. One car passenger underwent surgery for serious injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
