PART LAVACA, Texas — A fire engine was damaged Friday morning by a vehicle collision while responding to another, unrelated single-vehicle wreck on the Port Lavaca Causeway.
“It was pretty bad,” said Capt. David Scroggins, Port Lavaca fire department, as he described the damage to his department’s engine.
The engine’s cab sustained damage to its front, left side. Additionally, a tire and its steering were also damaged, making the vehicle undriveable, Scroggins said.
The silver GMC SUV that collided with the engine also sustained significant damage. The crash tore its front, right tire from its housing and mangled the vehicle’s exterior.
The identity of the SUV’s driver and others involved were unavailable Friday.
A firefighter who was inside the vehicle during the crash was uninjured but taken for examination at Memorial Medical Center, Scroggins said.
The engine was initially dispatched to the causeway after a silver sedan struck the exterior guardrail about 12:30 a.m., causing parts of the car to hang over the edge.
Although Department of Public Safety are investigating both wrecks, they were unable to provide details Friday evening.
