Va. fire truck catches fire, damages station’s roof

The truck and crew just got back from a call shortly before the fire; no one was injured

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Firefighters put out a fire at their own station Sunday morning.

Fox5DC reported that the fire broke out at Fire Station 26; 11 firefighters were on duty at the time of the blaze. No firefighters were injured.

Fire officials believe a fire truck parked in the station caught fire and spread to the attic. The truck and crew just got back from a call shortly before the fire, WJLA reported.

“From the area that it occurred, it was somewhere around the front of the cab,” Capt. Mark Menton said.

Flames tore through the roof of the station, melted equipment and torched the truck, according to the report.

The 2-alarm fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes.

“We’ll be operating here in the daytime,” Capt. Menton said. “The station did sustain damage so at nighttime we won’t be able to secure it. Units will be dispersed throughout the county.”

Investigators are still working to determine how the fire truck caught fire.
