VALPARAISO, Ind. — Quick thinking by firefighters saved more than $100,000 in equipment after a fire truck caught fire Thursday morning.
The Post-Tribune reported that three firefighters were bringing the truck to a fire call when the crew saw smoke, then flames, coming from the front of the truck.
They stopped the truck and emptied the four extinguishers they were carrying. Another unit was called to help fight the fire.
“I want to give credit to the duty crew,” Fire Chief David Nondorf said. “They put on air packs and started removing the equipment (from the truck). That was extremely good thinking.”
Once a second engine arrived, the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, according to the report.
While the damage was extensive, Chief Nondorf said he believes the truck can be repaired, according to the report.
