Air condensation

Tips

By Mark van der Feyst

Cold weather operations create problems with SCBA cylinders. When they are stored on an apparatus, the air inside is kept warm and will sustain itself in volume. Once the cylinder is exposed to cold weather, the air inside will condense and there will be a decrease in cylinder pressure.

At first glance, it may look like the cylinder was not properly filled. However, it’s actually due to the cold weather. The decrease in air will contribute to the working time available for the user. Be mindful of this during winter operations.
