SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco firefighters said industrial strength washing machines they received roughly a year ago could save their lives, but they’re not being used.
The jackets firefighters wear often collect cancer causing particles at fires and need to be specially cleaned.
Getting the jackets cleaned has become a source of frustration in fire stations throughout the city.
Last December, KTVU reported that the San Francisco Fire Department received five new industrial strength washing machines that push out toxic particles from firefighters clothing.
That was the first and last time the washing machines saw the light of day.
