Varnishing prompts hazmat call in downtown Jersey City

The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A hazmat situation in Downtown Jersey City triggered a large response yesterday morning, but by noon officials determined there was no danger and had left the location about two blocks from the Grove Street PATH Station, officials said.

Fire Director Armando Roman said there was varnishing work being done in the industrial building at 150 Bay St. and fumes from the process apparently escaped and triggered a call to 911 yesterday morning.

Firefighters responded and officials of the Hudson Regional Health Commission and state Department of Environmental Protection were also called to the scene, Roman said.

It was not until responders were able to don hazmat suits and investigate that they found the source of the fumes, Roman said, adding that no one was charged or issued a summons.
