More rungs above the roofline

Tips

By Mark van der Feyst

In basic training, firefighters are taught to extend a ground ladder a minimum of three rungs above the roofline. This is done so firefighters can see the ladder and have safer access on and off the ladder.

The benefit to those working on the roof increases when the ladder is five to seven rungs above the roofline. When raising the ladder to the roof, do not worry about counting the number of rungs raised above the line, just raise as many as possible.
