FRESNO, Calif. — A biopsy of skin from Fresno Fire Capt. Pete Dern has been sent to a cell-processing plant to grow the firefighter’s own skin to help in his recovery.

The new skin will be used as skin grafts for Dern, who was burned over 70% of his body on Sunday when he fell through a garage roof while fighting a house fire and was engulfed in flames.

His heroism has been reciprocated with fundraisers (an online donation page at youcaring.com was approaching $100,000 in pledges Friday evening) and blood drives, including one Friday in Fresno.
