FLIR offers 2 low-cost TICs

The two K-Series models sell for about $4,000 and $5,000

INDIANAPOLIS — Thermal imaging camera maker FLIR rolled out two cameras at FDIC priced for fire departments on tight budgets.

The only difference between the two units is that the more expensive K50 has a 320 x 240 thermal resolution, while that on the K40 is at 240 x 180. They have a 4-inch LCD screen with mode, zoom and power buttons on the face.

Users can toggle between five modes: NFPA firefighting, black and white firefighting, fire, search and rescue, and heat detection.

Heat detection mode will highlight the hottest areas, useful for finding hot spots. The search and rescue mode is more sensitive to lower temperatures, like those of a downed victim.

A trigger switch on the handle will capture an image. The units can store 200 JPEG images that can be retrieved via a USB port.

The two lithium ion batteries will last four hours between charges and the cameras weigh less than 2.5 pounds. The TIC can detect temperatures as high as 1,202 degrees and can operate in 500-degree F heat for 5 minutes.
