Denver firefighters begin use of new, lighter PPE to reduce heat stress

Single-layer PPE will provide Denver firefighters with better comfort and mobility while still offering protection

DENVER — Denver firefighters are now equipped with new, lighter protective gear designed to reduce heat stress and exposure to cancer-causing chemicals.

The single-layer PPE manufactured by Fire-Dex offers enhanced protection and weighs less, improving comfort and mobility for firefighters. The new gear will be worn while responding to motor vehicle crashes and wildfires, 9 News reported.

The initiative addresses the increased risk of cancer among firefighters due to exposure to hazardous substances during their duties, the fire department said. Incorporating advanced materials and design, the new gear aims to provide a safer working environment for Denver’s fire personnel.

The fire department told 9 News that they have been working to get the gear for about six months and now have enough gear to outfit every firefighter.
