NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 60-year-old man who was being taken in an ambulance to a hospital on the Eastern Shore Monday afternoon died in an accident on the way there, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened just before 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Lankford Highway (Route 13) and Wachapreague Road (Route 180) in Keller, said state police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
A 2013 Chevy ambulance with the Bloxum Volunteer Rescue Squad, which had its lights and sirens activated and carrying a patient, was traveling southbound on Route 13, Anaya said.
The driver of the ambulance drove through a red light at the intersection with Route 180.
The ambulance struck a 2013 Ford Star transit bus, causing the ambulance to lose control and overturn several times, Anaya said.
The patient in the ambulance, identified as Douglas R. McCready, of the 24400 block of Parksley Road in Parksley, died at the scene, Anaya said.
The driver of the ambulance, Peter Surran, 38, of Exmore, and two other squad members, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Anaya.
He was charged with failure to obey traffic signal, Anaya said.
The bus driver, identified as Jeanne K. Moore, 52, of Pungoteague, was the only person in the vehicle and was not hurt.
