OPINION: Firefighters risk their own safety to protect ours

With two of the nation’s largest fires, the now merged Sawtooth and Millard complex blazes, now in their second week and with new thunderstorms adding to the mix, firefighters have had to fight more than fire. They’re also having to deal with exhaustion from the continuing triple-digit heat.

But we want them to know, it’s not for naught — their communities thank them for their heroic efforts battling the flames in extremely difficult conditions.

With an estimated 82,000 acres of wildfires scorching the desert on the western edge of Morongo Valley and climbing into the San Bernardino National Forest in the mountains, the thousands of firefighters braving nature’s fury have had to deal with steep, rocky terrain, searing heat, shifting winds and the threat of yet more lightning — the conditions only intensifying as firefighters’ work has become more physically demanding.
