Whether or not you are a new or a longtime member of the fire service, you may have noticed images or heard people mentioning a Saint Florian. Here’s a quick primer on how Florian became the patron saint of firefighters.
Who is St. Florian?
Florian was a Roman army commander born in approximately 250 AD. Beyond his military obligations, Florian also organized and trained an elite group of soldiers that had one specific duty — fighting fires.
Why is St. Florian the patron saint of firefighters?
A key event to Saint Florian’s patronage of firefighters can be found in the story of his martyrdom. According to legend, when Florian was sentenced to death, his executioners planned to burn him at the stake, but Florian declared, “If you do, I will climb to heaven on the flames.” The executioners then switched tack and drowned him instead.
Another legendary tale associated with Saint Florian is that he once miraculously saved a burning house (some say an entire city) using just a single bucket or pitcher of water. As such, he is often depicted holding a pitcher of water. This legend is also the basis for his designation as the patron saint of brewers.
What is the St. Florian Prayer?
A prayer to Saint Florian by the late Cardinal Richard Cushing, Archbishop of Boston:
“Dear God, Through the intercession of our patron, Saint Florian, have mercy on the souls of our comrades who have made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of their duty, and on all who have gone before us after years of faithful discharge of their responsibilities which now rest on ourselves. Give us Grace to prepare each day for our own summons to Thy tribunal of justice. Into Thy hands O Lord, I commend my spirit. Whithersoever Thou callest me, I am ready to go. Merciful Father of all men, save me from all bodily harm, if it be Thy will, but above all, help me to be loyal and true, respectful and honorable, obedient and valiant. Thus fortified by virtue, I shall have no fear, for I shall then belong to Thee and shall never be separated from Thee.”
