NEW YORK — An FDNY probationary firefighter who suffered a medical episode during training died of natural causes, the city Medical Examiner said Friday.

Firefighter Vincent Malveaux, 31, died of complications of exertional rhabdomyolysis — the result of muscles breaking down and releasing proteins into the bloodstream. It is associated with strenuous exercise or normal exercise under extreme circumstances.

Malveaux, of Brooklyn, was stricken Dec. 2 at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall’s Island during a training exercise that came six weeks into his 18-week course, the department said at the time. He was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he died the next day.

Malveaux was considered to have died in the line of duty, FDNY officials said.

At his funeral, Malveaux’s older brother Edward recounted to mourners his sibling’s life-long dream of becoming a member of the department.

In his childhood bedroom, a 2012 FDNY calendar remained affixed to the wall, reminding Malveaux of his goal.

“I believe Vin used it for inspiration and motivation, a reminder each day as he got out of bed,” said Edward. “That was the first thing that came into his view — of his attainable goal.”
