BEAUREGARD PARISH, La. — A volunteer firefighter was killed and another was injured in a crash while responding to a medical emergency in Beauregard Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.
Shortly after 4 a.m. on July 15, Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash on Scallon Road, south of Louisiana Highway 26. The preliminary investigation revealed that Jonathan Ashworth, 23, of DeRidder, was driving a 2017 Ford F-150 westbound on Scallon Road while responding to an emergency call for service.
Ashworth, a Fire Protection District 4 volunteer firefighter, was accompanied by Tabitha Ashworth, also a firefighter. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left while in a curve and struck multiple trees. Ashworth sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Tabitha Ashworth sustained moderate injuries.
Beauregard Fire Protection District 4 Chief Eric Stracener said that visibility was limited due to dense fog.
A routine toxicology sample was collected and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Fire department and community response
Jonathan Ashworth had served as a firefighter/operator with Fire Protection District 4 since November 12018.
“He was the best person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was an asset to his community, his family, and this department. His smile and distinct voice will be missed,” Stracener said in a statement.
Fire departments across Southwest Louisiana have offered prayers and condolences to Ashworth’s family and the department. The Houston River Fire Department said flags would be flown at half-staff and asked for prayers for Ashworth’s family, the fire department, and all responders.
Ward Six Fire Protection District 1 asked the community for comfort and peace for the family and friends during “this horrific time.”
The Vinton Volunteer Fire Department expressed support for Beauregard Fire District 4 and Ashworth’s family. The DeRidder Fire Department also released a statement: “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a BPVFD4 firefighter who gave their life in the line of duty. To our neighbors, we stand with you, and we grieve with you. We honor this hero’s sacrifice and send our deepest prayers to their family, friends and department.”
