NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A woman and an off-duty firefighter suffered minor injuries after police said they were stabbed during an attempted robbery Friday afternoon.

At about 4:40 p.m., a woman was walking home on Filmore Street from Ferry Street and reported being followed by a man and a woman, police said. The couple said they were homeless and asked to use the woman’s cell phone.

The woman gave the couple her phone, but soon realized the couple didn’t intend to return the phone and confronted them. The man then stabbed the woman in her hand, police said.

An off-duty New Haven firefighter and a passerby saw what was happening and stopped the couple before calling police. The firefighter was also cut on his hand.

Radames Rivera, 19, and Brittany Estep, 22, were arrested and charged with the commission of assault, robbery and larceny. The couple’s residency is unknown.

Police said the incident is still under investigation. The identities of those involved with the incident were not provided.
