WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An injured Whitehall Township fire police officer was moved out of intensive care Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was taken Monday night when he was hit by a car at an accident scene.
Ryan Kramer, a 19-year veteran of the Whitehall fire bureau, suffered head injuries and broken bones just before 6 p.m. Monday when a motorist drove around traffic cones and ran into him, Whitehall fire Chief David Nelson said.
“He was propelled through the air when he got hit,” Nelson said.
Kramer was hit at MacArthur Road and Center Street, near the Autozone store, where witnesses said five vehicles collided earlier Monday afternoon. When he was hit, fire crews were cleaning up oil that had spilled in the crash.
Witnesses said it appeared the car that hit Kramer fled the scene, but they weren’t certain. Township police have provided no information on the accident.
Fire officials Tuesday afternoon said Kramer’s condition had improved.
“We are happy to report that Ryan Kramer, our fire police officer ... is being moved out of the ICU,” the fire bureau said on its Facebook page. “He has a long recovery ahead of him from his injuries. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.”
